Hi my gf and me are just ready to move into White Plains. We've never been to that area. I need to commute across Tappen Zee Bridge in the morning daily from White Plains to Rockland due to work. Since there's a construction on the way and I heard a lot of terrible stories about the bridge, I'm wondering how long I should expect a delay on traffic time.
Will I miss the busy bound in the morning, as the majority of cars likely go from Rockland to Westchester?
It's going to be at rush hours (about 7-7:30am) to drive this way. To return back in the afternoon is out of my concern because I could be at home at any time. Thanks!
If you look at google maps online, you can look up directions from where you're planning on moving (or the general area) to where work is and then where it says "leave now" you can change it to any day/time. Then you can see what traffic generally is every day of the week and check if leaving 10 or 15 minutes earlier or later will change your travel time significantly.
You should be ok. As you indicated, most of the commute is eastbound, and you will be heading west. Also, its a short drive in any event, and any traffic you will hit will not have to be dealt with for a great distance. Where in Rockland will you be working? In addition to google maps online, use the Waze app, which is very skilled at giving you live, and on the fly, navigation directions depending on traffic conditions. While crossing the TZ is your only realistic option, getting to and from it can change day to day depending on traffic.
Once a week I drive from the White Plains area on 287 to the last exit before the TZB. I'm on the road anytime between 7-8AM. In the six months I've been doing this, I have encountered backed up traffic only once. I can't vouch for the bridge itself or the Rockland side.
I used to commute to Bergen Cty from downtown White Plains every day. I concur- reverse commute was a breeze. You may end up taking more time to get out of WP than across the TZ bridge... WP is becoming a bigger and bigger city each year with more and more traffic.
