Couple of things:
- First, what's your price range?
- Second, if night life is that important to you then you need to stay as close as possible from the city. You don't want to have an hour commute late at night after, especially if you go heavy on alcohol.
- Third, good luck trying to find an apartment with a garage. Get used to the idea of your vehicle sleeping in the street unless you pay big money for a private garage. Believe me, even if you have good $$$, paying for a garage gets old pretty quickly.
- Third, White Plains is a very nice town indeed, probably like an hour or so commute to/from the city in the train. Might be less depending on your work schedule.
Finally, thanks for serving our country and good luck!
-Ed

You may also want to consider the McLean Ave section on Yonkers - it borders the Bronx, is close to Manhattan and has an active bar scene.

White Plains would be nice for you. It is about 35 minutes to Grand Central using the Metro North Harlem line. To the Bronx by car will be easy too. The huge problem is that WP is VERY expensive. To get an apartment there WITHOUT a garage, it will be around 1400 if not more. Maybe you should consider places closer to the Bronx such as Yonkers since you are just starting and do not seem to have kids.

McLean Ave is the the Yonkers/Bronx border, but the area is usually referred to as Woodlawn. Lots of bars, places to eat, young people. Reasonable rents. Heavy Irish neighborhood.
Where in The Bronx is your job? You might want to consider Bayside, Queens, which is just over the bridge and probably nicer than any neighborhood in The Bronx.

The Bronx is very diverse -Italian, Irish, Hispanic, African American etc. The McLean area of Yonkers (which borders the Bronx) just happens to be very Irish. The bars in that area are Irish pubs but populated by Irish and non-Irish people. Rents are significantly less expensive than WP, its closer to the city and the Bronx, and has easy access to a Subway line. Some areas of McLean/Woodlawn are better than others so keep that in mind when you're looking for a place to rent.

I recently moved to Yonkers myself and so far so good. Yonkers is the "next town up" going North from the city. Take a look a the map, Yonkers is right north of the Bronx. I think it would be fair to say that in some parts of Yonkers you start getting the "suburb" type of environment and not so much the "city look" My understanding is that the south-west part of Yonkers is not so nice. .
If you are looking into the "city life" only during the weekends, then either the Bronx or Yonkers will be fine for you.
