I'd look further into living in Rye. The school district is not all it's cracked up to be - there's a big difference between rankings and what actually happens in the classroom. If your children are creative, insightful, independent who learn in ways that are only slightly unique, districts like Rye and Bronxville are a disaster. You'll be fighting self esteem and self reliance issues for years. Eastchester has a much better track record in teaching to all children - not just the 10 per cent who "get the drill". You have lower taxes and housing prices. Most people leave New York to come up here end up having to do the private school thing anyway. So, I'd stay in a neighborhood where there's diversity and cultural stimulation.
You can get homes in Westchester in the $400's. They are not easy to find. White Plains, Valhalla, Hartsdale, all have possibilities, but it will not be easy.
All the best!
