I would not have given notice until it was a done deal, in writing, no contingencies. I have no idea what kind of legal case you have though if you they rescind the offer at this point.

My prior employer was a large fortune 50 company, one of the largest in the US. They did background checks that included credit reports, social media searches, criminal and civil litigation checks and in cases of some financial lines positions, personal interviews. I have seen people rejected when they were first choice after resume and interviews, but the background check failed. Be careful out there with what you say and do, the internet never forgets.
