Hi, would love some input from this forum. We are considering a move from Inwood (Upper Manhattan) to Westchester County. I am from Westchester but not as familiar with the area we are currently looking at.
We are mid-20s young professionals and both work in midtown Manhattan within walking distance to GCT. Not big on the nightlife scene but would love to be somewhere moderately walkable or close-ish to a "downtown" area with a few restaurants or bars. Ideally, we would like to stay within a 40 min commute into GCT. We would like to stay somewhere within walking distance of a train station on the Hudson line as it seems to be a lot more reliable and less crowded than the Harlem line. Plus, we could easily get to our old neighborhood via the Marble Hill station. We will have one car to share between the two of us.
Based on these parameters, we've seen online new rental developments in the Greystone/Hastings-on-Hudson area which interest us as the commute into GCT seems very manageable. I've never been to the area though, and from my research via Google Maps, it seems like a total dead zone. Is there much to do in these areas - in terms of entertainment or nightlife? Our budget will be around $2700/month (including parking and other fees) - will we be able to find a solid 1 or 2 bedroom in any of the river towns?
You're right that Greystone is a dead zone. Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, and Tarrytown all have nice, small, walkable downtowns with restaurants/bars (in general, much more family-oriented vibe than anything in Manhattan though), but not huge apartment inventories. Tarrytown is probably the liveliest of these towns, and runs express trains so it's at least as fast a commute as the ones right below it; you may want to start there.
You're not going to find anything acceptable in any of the rivertowns (Tarrytown's theater notwithstanding). Best bet would be either Stamford CT or White Plains, even if they are not along the Hudson line.
