Probably going to be taking a job in White Plains, downtown. Need to find home in the 2,000 SQFT range, with a commute at or less than 45 minutes, schools are not important, want something with low taxes, on a largest pice of land possible and would like to keep in the range of 550 to 650 K. Don't care if it's in CT or NY but want safe, quiet neighborhood. Any advice would be appreciated.
White Plains is already the suburbs. Why would you be willing to live so far away (45 minutes) just to work in White Plains? There are lots of areas around White Plains that are nice and within a 20-30 minute commute to downtown White Plains.
Seriously, momoftoo! They also think everyone will have the same priorities. Sure, WP is a suburb of NYC, but a city in its own right. I'm all for a big piece of land in a quiet place! Who needs 6 malls in walking distance if you're not originally from a city?!

Or even if you are from a city. As a native of NYC, who lived in Brooklyn until my mid 30's, I can state that I personally would rather die a painful death than live too near White Plains. Everyone is different and wants different things. Personally, I see no point in leaving NYC in order to live in a dense, crowded, noisy burb--you can buy a lovely Victorian in Brooklyn and have just as much property as you'll get in southern Westchester but still be in the city. Leaving the city to get a pale facsimle of the city seems stupid. But that's just me.
Back to the topic.. if the poster wants "the largest piece of land possible" and doesn't care about schools, he/she should look around Ridgefield in CT, Purdys in northern westchester, and in lower Putnam county. The drive to WP shouldn't be more than 25 minutes and you can also take MetroNorth.
I live in the Ridgefield CT area and it is really beautiful up here. I moved because the prices were way too expensive in Westchester-lots of land and horses up here!
Mahopac and Somers would work, higher prices in Somers than Mahopac but lower taxes both have good schools too even though they are not important to you.
