I live in the school district but not the village but the village provides the water, which I pay for.

While back, pipe in the street on my block broke. The village fixed it in a day.

Then sends me a bill for my share, evidently split between the homeowners on the block. Cover letter says "Village is not permitted to pay for stuff of nonresidents."

Before I start crackin the code and case law, anyone have any knowledge? Wrinkles? Defenses?

My share isn't that gnarly but just curious as to whether there are any experiences out there on this.

Contact the town you legally live in and ask them why you are being billed for repairs conducted by the water service? Where I live the adjoining city provides our water but my County Government where I lives pay to maintain the water pipes.

What's the school district/village/municipality? The multiple layers of govt make things pretty complicated but it seems as though t some point the town & village struck a deal to have the village serve non-village residents. I would imagine the town should bear the cost of the water repairs. Unless the repairs are needed on your specific spur - in that case it's your cost to bear no matter where the break happens.
