Hello! Need advice on where to live - we're relocating to NYC this summer from out of state, both of us will be working in financial district (one of us near Battery Park, the other by the Rector St. station). Have 2 young kids, looking for suburbs with great schools and community feel. Budget is flexible. I've read the various forums and can't get a real sense on the door-to-door commute time from Maplewood/Montclair/Glen Ridge NJ vs. Pelham/Larchmont. What do those commutes really look like? Is there a measurable difference between the 2 commutes? We'd like fastest commute possible (just like everyone else ) with great schools. Thank you!

I've done both (from Ridgewood) and always found the New Haven line to GCT then 4/5 downtown faster and much less stressful.

Thank you! How long is it door to door for you from Westchester! I’ve heard there are multi-year wait lists to park at stations in Pelham and Larchmont - what do people do when they don’t have a spot?

they find houses that are within walking distance to the train, ie 0.9mi or shorter. that's why those houses are coveted.

in any case, having a walk may be better vs driving to the station, looking for your non-reserved spot, walking back to the train, etc. and driving out of the lot in the evening.

by most accounts, seems like njt and LIRR are worse than metro north

Larchmont has no wait for train parking permits if you live in the Village of Larchmont.

Pelham has an approximately 9 year waitlist for parking even if you are a village resident.

Some also Uber back and forth each day- although not ideal- until they get their permit.

Walking distance to train (10-15mins) is best for health and psychiatric reasons!

Buy don't fear - you are looking at the official MNRR parking lots wait lists. However, most stations have nearby village/town lots which have no wait list or are first come first served.

That’s incorrect as to both of the queried places, Larchmont and Pelham, as there are no MNRR lots at either station. All the lots at those stations are owned by their respective villages. The resident waiting lists are as posted above - ~9 years for Pelham and no wait for Larchmont (at least for the daily lot, Lot 1 is full).
