In 20 years we will probably be using cars less than ever as other modes of transport become available - this is quixotic in my mind. Really - we want to increase cars in Westchester county?

Not building a bridge or tunnel will result in increased traffic. Building it will result in increased traffic. Traffic increases with the surge in population growth expected in the northern NYC commutable areas we have seen in the past 20 years and expect in the next 20 years. There is no way to avoid it. Any area getting a bridge built will object, understandably so. The people whose homes were taken when they built the verrazano in brooklyn still complain about it how it destroyed the neighborhood. That said, the people that use the bridge usually are fine with the resulting changes. Yes, new roads mean more traffic, why build a road if no one would use it. I would change my driving to use the new road/bridge/tunnel. Anyway, I do not think this will ever happen. the cost is too great, but I would still welcome it with open arms if there was a way to pay for it.
