Bedford Hills
Can anyone give me some info re: Bedford Hills vs. Bedford. There seems to be more affordable homes and townhomes in Bedford Hills. How is elementary school in Bedford Hills? Is it considered a desireable area of Bedford or not? Is there much diversity there? Is there a Metro-North station there? thanks for any info!!!

Bedford Hills is not part of Bedford. It's a separate village. There are slightly more affordable homes there. Sorry, but I know nothing about the schools there.

Beford Hills is still the Bedford School District (which covers all the Bedfords and Mt. Kisco). It has a nice little town with some high-end stores and a restaurant or two. There is a train station in the town (it's the Harlem line, stop after Mt. Kisco and before Katonah). There are relatively cheaper homes in the village and then more expensive properties with land on the outskirts (east and west). I believe that the town has a good size Latino population--or at least it used to (5 years ago the main street was all latino stores, now it is all expenive oriental carpet and furniture stores).

Bedford Hills has it's own elementary school. It has it's own Metro North Station. There is a large illegal population there, mostly concentrated in the downtown area. There are some apartment complexes that cater to low-income residents. There is the large women's prison as well. The closer you get to to Bedford Village, the nicer the houses get.
Bedford Central School district covers Mount Kisco, Bedford, Bedford Hills and Pound Ridge.

I took a look at a condo a few weeks ago in Bedford Hills. I got there a little before the open house and decided to drive down the street. Barely a block away I see a huge sign for the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Needless to say, I immediately left the area.

I lived in an apartment complex right next to the prison when I was in high school. It's a high security women's prison. Never had any issues. You were probably looking in Bedford Mews?

Yes. I looked at a 2 bedroom condo there. It was horrible inside. The layout was terrible and the asking price was too much.

How do you know that the Latino population in Bedford Hills is "illegal" as opposed to Green Card carrying? And, if it is, who cares. Why would that have any impact on someone's decision to live in a town?
As for the prison issue, there are $10 million dollar spreads a stones throw from the correctional facility. Beford Hills has huge estates to the west of town, as well as towards Bedford. The whole area is far too Waspy and white bread for my taste, but I wouldn't be concerned about the prison.

How do I know they are illegal? Due to the ICE Raids.
I lived in the area for a while, and yes, it would impact my decision on whether or not to live there. I had a house 2 houses down with 30 people living in a 3BR in shifts. It made street parking horrific, there were people hanging around outside waiting for their turn to sleep.
As a woman, it made me uncomfortable as well to get hooted at simply walking to the train station. Also - some people do not want to live in a town where there are 50-100 men lined up on the streets every morning waiting for work. Sorry if that is too honest for you. Speaking from personal experience.

There are loads of fully documented Latinos living in Mt Kisco, Bedford hills, Peekskill, etc. The woman who cleans my house (how tacky of me) lives in Peekskill and I know she has a Green Card, as does her brother who often works as a day laborer and waits on the sidewalk for work. People assume tht day laborers and others are "illegal," but many of them are not. And yes the ICE raids (which are totally un-American in my opinion) found undocumented people--but it found an extremely small percentage of the people living in the area. The vast majority are here legally, so refering to the popluation as "illegals" is totally inaccurate.
I completely understand not wanting to live near the behaviour you mentioned--that's one of the main reasons I left Brooklyn--but none of that behaviour has to do with people's legal status. You don't want to live next to a large population of low-income Latinos. OK. But if they all had Green Cards you still wouldn't want to live next to them. Their legal status is totally irrelevant.
