The most run-down areas of the Catskills are in pockets are in Monticello, Liberty, and Fallsburg (and even there, there are nice parts). Out in the western part, sure there's some poverty, but it's scenic and beautiful and there are plenty of middle class people, not to mention weekenders from the city. (Also, just because people are poor does not mean they aren't good neighbors and friends!) I am not aware of much crime in the area at all except in Monticello, and even there, it's mainly between people who have feuds with each other (i.e., if you're not involved in dangerous activities, you're probably fine).

Narrowsburg, Callicoon, Barryville, Eldred, Bethel, Jeffersonville -- all lovely places to be.

And yes, it would be very helpful to have a Catskills/Hudson Valley forum!

Westchester forum gets boring, not many new posts on a daily basis, it should be combined with Rockland, and give the Catskill/near Catskill region it's own forum! Additionally, I agree with poster who pointed out it's unclear which areas are inclusive in the "Hudson Valley" region, I always thought the Hudson Valley name was made up by someone who thought it made our area (whichever counties you think are included) sound more upscale, years ago nobody called this area the Hudson Valley. The same thing with Brooklyn being called East New York now, it sounds more uppity, IMO.

Default Catskills Thread

I guess this thread is long dead. But I'd like to know if any forum was created for the Catskills.

One real estate guy has a website that nicely describes the counties considered "the Catskills". I've never met him but can vouch for its accuracy (I have a house in Narrowsburg).

Sullivan County Catskills NY Real Estate

Click on the "Area Info" link.

A lot of confusion arises from the question of what is Hudson Valley and what is Catskills and I think that's just an East / West issue. There are a lot of people moving up from the city and you really can buy a house for 50K. Lots of artists, gay couples, people in design and fashion but also very much Trump country in 2019.

This is David Knudsen's website - he is a terrific source of information for Sullivan County and he's been helping people buy homes and second homes for decades. His descriptions of the areas are correct; he can also shed light on the taxes up there.

I am building a new home in the area, and there are all kinds of new places opening up. A super huge indoor water park in Thompson and a new bakery/cafe/park in Jeffersonville and every month there's another farm-to-table restaurant.
