There is one important area of New York state that is left out of this forum, and that is the Sullivan County area of the Catskill mountains. With so many people buying second homes there, and the new 'entertainment city' and casino open now, I think the Catskills should be added to the NY forum.

I have tried to contact whoever runs Citidata regarding adding a new area, but received no answer.

I thought if people acknowledged this in this forum, and it received lots of comments, maybe the mods would notice.

The western Catskills had one of its largest real estate booms in 2016, and people are moving to the area or buying mountain getaways. It would be helpful to have a forum that includes the western Catskills for info on schools, jobs, etc. Thanks!

I think it is a fine idea. I do not know how to get in touch with a mod or admin, but I wish you the best.

Maybe direct this to the Albany forum?

Yes, I thought of that, but people in Albany are not the ones buying the second homes in the western Catskills; it's more Westchester, Brooklyn, Manhattan and even Long Island.

There really needs to be a Hudson Valley/Catskills forum, as it is a general area that seems to get left out of the state conversation or is fragmented on here.

That would be helpful. Are SeventhFloor and Airborne the mods for Westchester, too?

The problem with this is that there won't be a consensus on what is Hudson Valley and what is Catskills. Would a Hudson Valley forum include Westchester and Rockland? Some people think Westchester and Rockland are part of the Hudson Valley. Some people say the HV starts at West Point and Putnam/Dutchess. Some people think Albany is part of the HV. Some don't. As for the Catskills, opinions are probably all over the map as well. And a combined HV/Catskill forum, if defined broadly, would be a mess. Bronxville and Pearl River, just to pick two communities, have no connection or commonality with any random Delaware or Greene County towns. They have much more in common with Garden City, NY, Stamford, CT, and Ridgewood, NJ.

Long Island, by contrast, works because it's isolated, and therefore, has defined boundaries. But that is special case owing to its geography.

Deciding on subforums is a never-ending debate. For instance, in many respects, Rockland should be part of a NJ forum and/or a Bergen County subforum. Most people would probably link Rockland more with Bergen than Westchester and points north.

In this vein, there should be a metropolitan NY forum. The NYC area is more of an interconnecting unit of communities than NYS is.

Bottom line is that there is no correct way to set up the forums.

In this case, I wouldn’t include Westchester and Rockland Counties. To be honest, Rockland should be included in the Westchester forum or go by the NYC metropolitan divisions.

I think the bigger picture is that a good chunk of the state should or could have their own forum due to have a substantial population that doesn’t really get served by the current set up.

Catskills, Hudson Valley for anything north of Westchester, south of Albany. Gets my vote too. A lot of people are relocating/getting second homes there.

The areas all spill over into one another-I don't know that they have to have definite boundaries.

Right now, the areas served go up the eastern channel of the state, then head west to Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester, like an upside down 'L.'

The lower, western part of the state, Orange county, Sullivan and Delaware have no place for questions or info on the area, and there are lots of people moving up to the mountains and foothills of the Catskills. The population is a combination of Brooklynites, natives who have deep roots in the mountains, Westchester escapees, farm-to-table entrepreneurs, retirees and dairy farmers.

It would be so helpful to be able to wade through some of the towns of this 'new frontier.'
