My fiance works in Manhattan and I live and work upstate in Orange County. We are getting married in November and we want to move to Westchester to be halfway between each of our jobs and families. We are looking at the Tarrytown area because we like the area and its easy for me to hop on the thruway or for her to jump on the train. We have one medium sized dog and our budget is around $1300/month for rent. Everyone keeps warning us that the area is quite expensive. Is that monthly price feasible for a one bedroom apartment in the area or are we barking up the wrong tree? Are there other towns I should be looking at instead? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You might want to check out Ossining.

Tarrytown is a wonderful town, but I fear your budget might be a little bit low.

Ossining would be a bit too far of a commute for me since its so far from the bridge. Any other suggestions of towns in the Tarrytown area that might be less expensive?

What about lower Rockland Cty??? Pretty close to city and easier commute for you. Also- much more affordable. Tarrytown is a great place- lots of people walking around, good parks and I think if you could searching you'll be able to find something in your price range- possibly?

I know Rockland County well and we've thought about it, the only thing is that the commute into Manhattan doesn't seem to be as easy from that side of the river.

Any part of Central Westchester you might be able to find something that could work.
Look on Craig's List for rentals. If you are going to be here for 4 years or more you should think about a co-op. All the best! Kevin O'Shea |
