Commuting from Westchester to Long Island
Does anyone else do it? We are considering a move to a rivertown in Lower Westchester and are wondering what the Cross County Parkway traffic (to Hutch) is like. We know he'd have to pay $5 per bridge crossing, which adds up to $200+ per month (plus gas). But will the traffic be a nightmare?
Would it be better to look in Larchmont/Mamaroneck instead? My husband works in Port Washington on the north shore.
Thanks for any help here!

You'll cry. And then you'll drive through Queens, and cry some more. If you have to live in Westchester, live closer to the bridges. I know someone who did the reverse commute, and quit because it sucked so bad.

I would not live in Westchester and commute to LI. I grew up in Westchester and my family still lives there, and live in LI now, so I make that drive frequently. It is HORRIBLE traffic wise even during non rush hour. There is no easy way to do it via car or public transport.

when you get backed up before you even leave westchester on a random afternoon not during rush hours, something is wrong with the road system.

Ask me why I moved from LI to Westchester
As suggested above, I wouldn't do it either, which is why I'm living here now. In my experience, it is not worth the hassle.

Ugh. Sounds much worse than we thought.
Thanks everyone for your replies and help though. Not sure what we are going to do now.

Hi- It all depends what time you leave and return home from work. My husband drives to Wall St everyday from Irvington- and takes him 1/2 hour- but he leaves around 5am. I know people who drive to LI from New Rochelle and Pelham everyday and they must not think it is too bad- since they have been doing it for 20+ years. If you leave after 7am to get there or after 4pm- I would say forget. Unless you are leaving really early or after rush hour- it is gonna be a long haul- but doable.
