Just checked this year's study and both Westchester and NJ counties (Bergen, for e.g.) get "F" grades--not even "D"s.

I have to agree about the trains. I am on the green line for Metro North and its very reliable also. I have had to take NJ transit a few times and know others who take the LI RR and they are always experiencing delays. Penn Station is so crowded and the trains are a lot noisier.

If money is no object...then Connecticut is the place for you...there is lot of monied sophistication there. Even the "bad" neighborhood of Ct, looks clean and just a little poor. NJ is a mix bag but, mostly "soccer mom" bedroom communities with a twist of upper middle class sophistication. It has two real crap places..but, on the whole the state is great because you have great roadways and hell of a lot of stores. Jerseys best kept secret...they have fabulous parks in the middle of these bedroom communities. NY is another mixed bag but agreat state, if it exits you will find it in NYS but,...with the WORST taxation system next to CA....every thing imaginable is taxed. Even if money is no object...."Only a fool parts with his money" All three states have unreasonably high taxes....and I for one don't like to be a politicians "serf"......I like all three states....but for living purposes I would pic CT. in the tri state area. Ct...has sophistication . It is close to water. It is a short commute to NYC.

doghead - it seems that it leaves you with few options - either suffer or move out of the area

I haven't lived in NY yet, but I've taken Metro North several times, and I actually felt like the people were a bit friendlier than on NJ Transit. I actually saw 3-4 people that seemed to have a standing poker game going on their trip home. Not to say that I haven't chatted with people on NJ trains as well, but there may be something to the luck element of it, and the fact that Metro North has, at least by reputation, the element of reliability shouldn't be discounted.
I would also echo someone's sentiment that most NJ towns are very family friendly, and as a result seem to have a lot of the "soccer mom" type sentiment - which might be great if, like the original poster, you have kids, but if you don't, it can get a bit much.
