Hi, my daughter was on a group trip to Israel last summer and she had the equivalent of about $35 in Israeli money left and forgot to exchange it at the airport. She accidentally took it with her to college but now that she's back on a big break she asked me about exchanging it for American money since it's not simply "a few dollars to keep as a souveneir".

I know in the past the Bank Leumi branch in White Plains would do it and actually had a rep as a go-to place for exchanging all kinds of foreign money from other places, but it looks like they are not there anymore. Google found me another place in the Westchester Mall that apparently is closed down for good (COVID?).

All the other places Google found for me are in Manhattan and I rarely go down there for anything both since COVID started and my job changed long ago. Is there anywhere in Westchester (and I mean anywhere including the airport or all the way up to Peekskill) or the northern Bronx or adjacent parts of Fairfield County that will do this? I'm off from work for two weeks so I have the time to do this now, but again want to avoid the time and expense of going to "the City" unless I was going for something else.

Thanks in advance of your assistance!

My local Chase Bank does money exchange - so does Well Fargo. Just go into your bank and ask.

OK thanks will do. Do they exchange Israeli money or just places like the UK, France, Canada and Mexico?

My local bank will also exchange money. Any money recognized by the US they will exchange for a fee and at the prevailing rate. Call your local bank to find out more.

Please be advised that some places will not accept coins.

In fact, I made a similar thread about this recently. I would say explore all options when it comes to this area. Meaning, call places that do check cashing services. They might be able to help you.

Thanks, it's actually just a single 100 shekel bill so that's not a problem (Google says $32 at the moment). Coins I would keep because its not worth it for that. I'll check around.

I just Googled and found out there's a Wells Fargo branch walking distance from where I live so I'll try that tomorrow morning.

UPDATE: I tried both a Chase and Wells Fargo near me and both said I had to have an account there for them to do it. At Wells Fargo they even at first said they only do Canada, Mexico, UK and euros but a manager overheard it and told them otherwise.

The only accounts I have are at a small one-location Credit Union that I don't think does it and due to covid makes you plan appointments way in advance and joint accounts with my college age kids at TD Bank. So tomorrow I am going to try TD Bank and see.

If that doesn't work, someone on the Fairfield County forum (I cross posted there) suggested just ebay-ing the bill and taking some losses if I don't want to hold onto it so that might be my next step.

Yes, I would have assumed you have to have an account at a bank to get services for them. Banks exist to serve customers, they are not public institutions. I would wait until you have to go to an airport or the city. Good luck.

Seriously, that is stupid. They are making money on the transaction so it's not like "going into a restaurant just to use the bathroom", etc. I am a customer for the moment. I'm not attacking you, just the concept.

They might not be making money on the transaction. Do you have a friend that has an account at any major bank? If so, maybe you can ask them if they can exchange it for you?
