Living in Larchmont
We're moving back up to the NY area and Larchmont is one of the towns we've considered. We've read many of the threads about Larchmont but have a few more questions. Are there many stay-at-home moms or do more work. We noticed many nannies, but weren't sure if that was due to working parents or just general help. Also, can anyone comment on Hommocks middle school, as well as Chatsworth vs. Murray Ave.-- we've read mixed reviews about Larchmont/Mamaroneck middle and high schools, but good things about the elementary schools . Do most children in Larchmont go to the public schools or do many go to private or Catholic schools. Also, would Larchmont be described as a pretentious or snooty town? We have tried very hard to keep our kids down to earth and are looking for a place where people are not trying to keep up with the Joneses. Thanks so much!

There are a mixture of stay at home moms and working moms in Larchmont, and the nannies you saw could belong to either since some of the stay at home moms have part time (and in some cases full time) nannies.
Most children go to the public schools, there is a Mamaroneck Schools Foundation which ensures that the schools are well funded to offer many services and programs so most residents usually send their kids there and are happy with both the middle and high schools. Larchmont and neighboring Mamaroneck by the water have a sizeable French population because of the French American School which has its campuses in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, a lot of the French expats send their kids there but not all. Larchmont is probably the least (or one of the least) pretentious affluent towns in Westchester.

Larchmont may be the least pretentious of some of the affluent towns around here, but you will have to wrap little anchors around their feet to keep them down to earth in Larchmont. I speak from long experience. Larchmont has it's own special attitude. And very good schools, you'll be pleased.
