Default Apartments in Yonkers

I am considering moving to Yonkers. Can anyone recommend an area or a specific apartment complex in which I could rent a decent one bedroom apartment for about $800.00?

I know there are variables to this question, but approximately how long does it take by bus or train to get from Yonkers to Midtown Manhattan?

Is there any other city close to Yonkers where I could find a nice one bedroom apartment for about $800.00?

Any help you give will be very appreciated. Jerry

In that general area of the county, for the rent range you've specified, I would suggest also looking in nearby areas of Mount Vernon and New Rochelle. All of these areas have some parts that are not as desirable as others, due to the transitional nature of their current states of affairs. So, you might have to look in more places to find an apartment that you like.

You can easily link to train stations in New Rochelle and Pelham to get to NYC via local bus routes, the same as Yonkers. That said, you can also take some Westchester Bee Line buses to NYC subways in the Bronx, which allows MetroCard transfers and is less expensive on a monthly pass basis, but takes a bit longer than suburban MetroNorth train service.

Generally, if you're close to the Bronx in Yonkers, it's the Riverdale-VanCortlandt-Woodlawn areas and they're actually quite decent areas overall. You might also find an apartment in your range in this section of the city, but it would be a hunt as they are among the more expensive of Bronx offerings, especially Riverdale.

Thanks for the valuable information. I appreciate the time you took to write.

My first choice, of course, would be to live in Brooklyn or Queens. From '97-'99 I lived in the Fort Green-Clinton Hill areas of Brooklyn. I paid $850.00 for a nice one bedroom apartment, but now I would probably have to start at $1,000.00. And I think Queens is even more expensive than Brooklyn.

That is why I mentioned Yonkers, but I will definitely check out New Rochelle and Mount Vernon.

You're welcome. You're right about that, since you'd be in the $1000+ range before even setting foot in the neighborhood near where you used to live. Depending upon how gritty an area with which you'd be comfortable, however, you could find something in parts of Queens or Brooklyn for around the same money, so it might be worth a look, although the transportation from some of the further out areas is a little lacking unless you can find a place on the LIRR on Queens for a faster commute.
