Central Elementary in Larchmont (Mamaroneck, Hastings: transplants, rental, house)

Does anyone know this school? We are looking at a house in this district and I found that it has a lower rating on greatschools.net than other elementary schools in Larchmont (6 as opposed to 8 or 9 at the other local elementary schools). Does anyone know why and if it is justified? We are not looking for a school that really emphasizes test prep and keeping their scores up, but one that has an expanded arts curriculum, a nurturing environment and a more progressive approach to classroom teaching. So "scores" like this aren't necessarily reflective of what we want.

We have been trying to find a decent spacious rental in Hastings for months because we loved the schools there when we visited, but there just seems to be nothing out there. So now we are expanding our search to Larchmont.

There is a bit more diversity in Central than Chatsworth or Murray in Larchmont. Many people prefer Central for that reason. I have only heard wonderful things about Central.

Thank you so much Nadia! I am going on a tour tomorrow morning and we are very close to closing the deal on the house, so it looks like that is where we might end up very soon.

I really like how vibrant and walkable Larchmont is, but have a tiny reservation about the amount of wealth there. We are comfortable but not rich by any stretch of the imagination. I am a stay at home mom and am hoping not everyone there has nannies (not that I have anything against nannies! ). I like the fact that our kids would go to middle/high school in Mamaroneck with a more diverse mix than in many other W'chester towns. Also, my husband is European and there seem to be lots of European transplants in the town which is kind of nice.

ceskykrumlov, we are in a similar boat and I was wondering if you ended up there, which elementary school your child(ren) are attending? Also, any info on your overall experience...pros and cons would be great. Thanks!
