Default Question on Yonkers, Hastings and Irvington

hi there. My husband and I are looking around for APT/Houses to rent in westchester. Since I work in the city (and have been doing 4 hour commute per day from the place we live in NJ, which is no fun), we would like to be close to train stations, preferably walking distance.

We've seen a couple possible places in Irvington and we really like the town. Now we found more in Hastings and a loft/studio/residential place on Main Street in Yonkers (supposed to be 1 block away from the train).

I've been reading some of the posts here on Hastings and Yonkers to find that Hastings might not be as "nice" of a town (compared with Irvington) and main street Yonkers might be scary. (Correct me if I'm wrong please).

Can someone offer some advice? We need to move pretty soon and keeping on searching is really exhausting....For example If Main street in Yonkers is a no go, then we would not bother going there all the way from NJ after work...

And please advise the difference between Irvington and Hastings. Any bad areas we should avoid in Hastings? safety walking around at night in town and near the train station? fun things to do in town?

Thank you very much!

LZ

Main Street in Yonkers is not terribly nice right now, and the areas surrounding it are not the best. There are nice parts of Yonkers, but they tend to be more towards train stations on the Harlem Line or the Greystone area. For Main Street, I would not think it's worth the trip, even if it is close to the train station, since that area is still very much transitional.

Hastings and Irvington are pretty similar. Hastings is not as wealthy as Irvington, overall, and Irvington has more character. Other than that, there's nothing to fear in Hastings as it's a nice small village on the river. They are both villages in the Town of Greenburgh, and both have good schools. Irvington has tended to have more of an older money character, more on par with Bronxville and Pelham than newer money.

Thank you so much BMWGUYDC!
This saves us a trip to Yonkers.
I guess since we are only renting, and we don't have children, Irvington and Hastings are pretty much the same, and the difference would be between the individual available apt/rental houses. Would it be the wise way to look at it?

Indeed, that would be a very good way to look at it. Both are on the Hudson, convenient, affluent villages. And, they're not far apart, so if you find a shop or restaurant in one or the other that you like, it's not 25 minutes each way in the car to patronize it.
