Compared to other towns closer to the city, Port Chester is pretty tame. I lived in an apartment on Fox Island 25 years ago, when I got out of college & couldn't afford to live anywhere else in NY. I still visit relatives there now. Recently, I've been out at night in downtown PC, and never felt safer. 25 years ago you couldn't walk anywhere in town at night, but now there are so many great restaurants and clubs open, plus there are tons of young folks out & about.
It would be a plus to speak Spanish; but everyone is friendly & hard working. Fox Island is an older area, but pretty safe. I don't recommend walking alone ANYWHERE in ANY town at night if I was a female, but I live in southeast Fl. & wouldn't do it here either. Daytime in Port Chester is fine. I think there is less crime now because the residents who are from S.A. do not want to get into any trouble & be sent back to their homeland. Just a thought.
You'd be surprised, for a buck or two, you may have neighbors who would be willing to drive you & from the metro, especially if you lived in a multi apartment complex.
Good luck deciding.
