Angry Schools

Depending upon which area you pick...you will probably end up sending your son to a private school...Pelham/Pelham Manor has a good school system...and the commute to Throggs Neck is 10 - 15 minutes by car down Shore Road...but it is a bit pricy...New Rochelle is the next town up...but they have a hugh gang problem...which you can experience for yourself by visiting...the next town up is Larchmont...which also has a good school system...but of course your commute time will increase...

Since you might consider a private school for your son's last year of school...you could find a nice rental right in Throgs Neck that might suit your needs...but before you decide...do yourself a favor and price auto insurance on your vehicle (s) before you make your move into "The Bronx"...for if you are paying $500 a year now...expect to pay at least $3000 a year or more if you need theft/collision on your vehicle...

Thanks Rusty78. Do you know how far the Larchmont area is from Throgs Neck? Yeah, i dont want to live in the Bronx, or directly in Nyc for that matter. I prefer the outskirts. I know Insurance is going to be ridiculous as oppossed to what I am paying now in VA.

Larchmont is about 25 to 30 minutes using Shore Road and I think US 1...but depending upon where in Larchmont...you could jump on the Hutchinson River Parkway and/or I95and then follow the signs to the Throggs Neck Bridge...depending on traffic...15 to 20 minutes...Public transportation is really not that great from Westchester to Throggs Neck...so you should definately plan on driving...

Just guessing...but is you new job at the Merchant Marine Academy????

Yes it is. Oh that sounds good too. I am looking on craiglist now for places in Larchmont. I see some places in Brewster and Westchester Putnam County line as well.

In Yonkers, it gets tricky with the schools since there is more than one high school. Yonkers HS has a good reputation, but that's the only one that I would recommend sending a child to in the city. There are some good private and catholic schools in Westchester, however, so if you find a nice place in Yonkers, you could go that route.

Brewster is likely going to be on the order of an hour via automobile to The Bronx, without a delay around White Plains. In morning traffic, I would estimate it to be close to an hour and a half.

Harrison is also a nice town, though it, too, can be more expensive. However, there are some multi-family and duplex houses in Harrison that are not too outrageous for the area.

Oh ok, I did see some nice 2-3 bedroom houses/apartments for rent in Brewster that were very affordable. I didn't see anything in Harrison yet. Thanks for the info bmwguydc, i'm on it!!

Brewster is WAY up there. It's not even in Westchester County - it's in Putnam County. That is one awful commute.

Slimmy...why don't you give the Human Resourse Manager at the school a call...I'll bet you would not be the first one who did...he/she should be able to answer many of your questions and even put you in touch with some of your future peers...

So you're saying Yonkers have a good school system, but most of the area is undesirable?
There is no good mass transit going to Throgs Neck. If your plan is to take the bus, beware that while NYC bus service always runs, it can take a while.
