Yes, we are still considering it. We currently reside in a townhouse in Chappaqua, 3 bedrooms, big enough that we don't have to move. (We have two young children). But we are always toying with the idea of moving to something bigger (with a 4th bedroom for an Au Pair as well), and Croton would be around the top of our list. I should now try to talk you out of it, so you're not outbidding us on the same houses.
Seriously though, I wouldn't focus too narrowly on 1 town. While on this board, we nitpick the differences between the different towns, the differences aren't that dramatic. There are plenty of excellent school districts, with good train commutes, that you could include in your search. So it becomes where do you find the right house in your budget, taking into consideration all other factors. For example, when we bought our current townhouse, we had already been outbid on a townhouse in Ardsley, and were considering a townhouse in Irvington. (Irvington would have been a slightly better commute, the townhouse was larger, but it was a bit more expensive with higher taxes, and the development wasn't as nice. So we opted for Chappaqua).
In terms of where to stay.... I don't really know of any place in Croton, I believe there is a motor lodge, and a couple of inns. There are a couple of moderate hotels (Like a Comfort Inn) in Hawthorne, Tarrytown, White Plains area. Those would all be centrally located in Westchester. There is a Holiday Inn in Mount Kisco.
Assume you would be traveling with your kids... May I ask how old they are?
If and when you're getting closer to making a trip, myself and others could point out some of the places you might want to see and visit. Are you familiar with the area at all?
