Cute, Safe, Affordable town to move to?
I'm looking to move within the next couple of years to upstate NY. I want to buy a home and start a family there. I want to move to a smaller town with a quaint vibe, some place safe, where my kids can grow up. I am also looking for a place with inexpensive real estate, where I can buy a 3-4 bedroom house for under $300,000. Any ideas?

There are a few people who consider Westchester to be upstate.... Although it's a real stretch of the term.

You might want to post in the general "NEW YORK" forum. $300-400k in a safe area for a 3-4BR house is not going to happen in Westchester. You might be thinking further upstate.

Oh yeah, it's going to happen. 400K would buy you a nice 3BR in a safe area when we reach bottom. Westchester is not in a different planet. When manhattan prices and NY environs fall so will westchester. Just wait. |

If Westchester is far enough upstate for you, then just do an internet search...house prices have come down a great deal and there are houses to be found (especially in the upper portion of Westchester and in lower Putnam) that are in the $300,000 - $400,000 range, even for 3-4 bedrooms. The thing to keep in mind is a lot of these are older houses and may only have 1 bathroom.
