Default Cute, Safe, Affordable town to move to?

I'm looking to move within the next couple of years to upstate NY. I want to buy a home and start a family there. I want to move to a smaller town with a quaint vibe, some place safe, where my kids can grow up. I am also looking for a place with inexpensive real estate, where I can buy a 3-4 bedroom house for under $300,000. Any ideas?

There are a few people who consider Westchester to be upstate.... Although it's a real stretch of the term.

You might want to post in the general "NEW YORK" forum. $300-400k in a safe area for a 3-4BR house is not going to happen in Westchester. You might be thinking further upstate.

Oh yeah, it's going to happen. 400K would buy you a nice 3BR in a safe area when we reach bottom. Westchester is not in a different planet. When manhattan prices and NY environs fall so will westchester. Just wait.

If Westchester is far enough upstate for you, then just do an internet search...house prices have come down a great deal and there are houses to be found (especially in the upper portion of Westchester and in lower Putnam) that are in the $300,000 - $400,000 range, even for 3-4 bedrooms. The thing to keep in mind is a lot of these are older houses and may only have 1 bathroom.
