I whole agree with 14534NY about the state of shopping in Westchester. There is one Whole Foods in the entire county and horrible supermarkets. I moved to Bergen County, where there is nothing BUT shopping, which is the other extreme. I think BC has gotten very dirty and congested from the last time I lived here. I don't think there's an easy or good answer to esciar1's question. I am finding it very hard to find these things mentioned in esciar1's post myself in the NY area. Mamaroneck might be a good choice, but very expensive compared to NJ. Teaneck in BC in nice and walkable too but you have to deal with the GW Bridge. Good luck.

An important consideration: Bergen County has large, regional high schools while Westchester has small town-specific high schools.

I would choose Westchester over Bergen County just to avoid the dreaded New Jersey accent. Wouldn't want my kid ending up with one..

Bergen County will have (slightly) less expensive housing and lower taxes, but you will have a more brutal commute to the Bronx and have to pay to cross a toll bridge. Also, if you still have family/friends in Albany you wish to visit, it will be much easier to do so from Westchester (especially if you live in northern Westchester, which would be about 20-30 miles closer) than from Bergen (besides being further away, the toll issue......from Westchester you take the scenic Taconic Parkway and save on Thruway tolls). Good luck!
