gsheridan is on a distinguished road
I understand what bkhakis is saying about Rockland not being comparable to NY, but I don't think anyone on here is intentionally trying to mislead the OP into believing otherwise. Nobody is saying Rockland has anything exactly like the East Village. I agree whith the others who have suggested Nyack and Piermont. They're at least worth a look. The OP never said they need something exactly like the East Village.

I would think Nyack would have a better chance of meeting the requirements than Piermont, but might still fall short because it's pretty small. I still think they're both worth a look. Nobody is suggesting buying a home in one of these areas sight unseen. Take a trip and check them out.
You'll know pretty quickly if they have the right vibe. There are plenty of houses for rent all over Rockland and Westchester, so even after you decide on an area, you don't have to commit to buying immediately.

As far as commute, there is the TZ Express bus which gets you to the Tarrytown train station from Nyack. From there you can get an express to Grand Central. I've never done it, but I would guess the full trip is right around 60 minutes from the bus stop in Nyack to Grand Central.

Tarrytown and Irvington are very nice, but like others have said, they're probably very
family-oriented.

What about Queens? I don't know it well, but I would imagine the squish factor is a little less severe than Manhattan.

Oh, and about people from Rockland being rude if you go to the wrong parts. I think it's fairly obvious that you can say that about just about any county or state in America.

The TZ Express, from the Park & Ride at the Palisades Center, is 80-90 minutes.
