Default Does nyc local tax (income) apply to Westchester residents?

Do the residents of Bronxvile have to pay the nyc local tax on top of the ny state tax? How about White Plains? (for the personal income tax)

Where is the boundary of the nyc city limit as far as the local taxes are concerned?

Are there other local taxes for the suburbs like Bronxville, New Rochelle, and White Plains?

Thanks.

The only local income tax, and it's a tax surcharge on the state taxes, in Westchester is the City of Yonkers. All of the NYC taxes end at the Bronx-Westchester line; however, certain city employees who live in the suburbs have to pay city tax regardless of place of residence.

By "city employees" do you mean people who work in the city or people employed by the city?

Employed by the city as municipal employees are required to pay the city the amount they would pay in city taxes if they were to reside within the five boroughs. Anyone who works in NYC and resides in the suburbs does not have to pay the tax, so long as they work for NYS, the federal government, or a private employer.

NYC employees who must pay the NYC tax file a specific form with NYC each year to do so.

Currently, no. For years people who worked but did not live in NYC paid a NYC commuter tax. It was repealed as to NY state suburbians, then successfully challenged as unconstitutional.

I guess if someone applied it to everyone who worked in NYC regardless of residence it might have a shot.

I fully expect attempts to revive it.

If you work in Westchester and live in Yonkers, you'd have to pay Yonkers income tax.

This may sound naive but for someone who's coming in from overseas who's not familiar with the tax system in NY, I just want to know what are the advantages of living in Yonkers (and pay Yonkers income tax) as opposed to living in a different area in Westchester where you don't have to pay additional income tax.

We're moving to Westchester in a couple of months for a job in Hartsdale. I had been looking online for potential places to rent with a limited budget of a max of $1800/month, and it seems like Yonkers seem to have quite a few rentals that would suit our needs (1-2 bedroom, close to public transport, easy access to bike & walking trails).

Yonkers has an income tax surcharge, not a 10% income tax. It's calculated on your net state tax (amount you pay in state taxes), not income. The current rate is 10%, per the 2009 tax forms, so if you owed $10k in net state tax, you would file a Yonkers return for $1k extra.
