I've lived here 95+% of my life and I'm still shocked (to the point that after my first post-college job I've tried hard to work in the suburbs).
Anyway, as others said, some carpool, others have spouses who are able to p/u and drop off, others just pump quarters. Some drive to "major" stations like Stamford or White Plains or New Rochelle or Mt. Vernon East or Yonkers or Tarrytown where there's a lot more parking (though still metered and expensive). Some stations are positioned such that you may get a free street space with a somewhat short walk if you allow plenty of time, two I know of like that are Mt. Vernon East and Dobbs Ferry, but it gets aggravating to do that on a daily basis and it could take you 30 minutes to find a person who lives around there who drives to work open up a space.
I also know a couple of "extremists" who try to really save money and drive to somewhere in the Bronx and take the subway, but generally parking is even harder to find (especially free street parking) and you may find your car broken into one day (from my experience of doing this for very occasional daytime trips to Manhattan your best bet is near the D train around Bedford Park Blvd......but again I would not do this on a regular daily basis).
