Hey I'm thinking about moving this summer in July and I've been searching the NYC metro area. Right now I'm in Roselle, NJ (Newark/Elizabeth area)
My budget is 315K max and Mount Vernon has some small quaint single family homes available within this budget.

Just wanted to get more info on the area. How is Mount Vernon with its crime? I hear mix results about it. BTW I'm black so i don't have a problem about the city being predominately black.

Any input is helpful input.

Other places i'm looking into is Union NJ, Hackensack NJ, West Orange NJ, and Bloomfield NJ.
Is it worth it to look into Mount Vernon?

I hear the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon is nice and is a diverse area of the city.

I live in Fleetwood, it's very nice and very mixed/diverse. North of the Cross County Parkway it gets very suburban (looks like neighboring Bronxville, only with a much more diverse and welcoming populace), up there it would be hard to find a house for $315K.

The bad, "hi crime" is basically the area south of the Metro North New Haven Line tracks. Though even down there there's a neighborhood called Langdon Terrace that is relatively upscale and nice quiet safe houses (it's virtually 100% black but as you said you are so I don't think you'd have any problem fitting in).

Good luck! I definitely think you should look in Mt. Vernon

yeah you can find something for that price range in langdon terrace or in parkside both southside nabes

Crime in Mt Vernon, well it depends. If your looking for it, it will surely find you but if you mind your business it will be find. There are a few spots to watch your back in, just use common sense and you'll be just fine in the vernon.
