Does Tarrytown have a parking garage near the MTA train station?
I live in NYC and I'm planning on leaving my car in westchester county for long term parking. I only use it occasionally and the $500/mo in parking in NYC is killing me.
I'm considering the Tarrytown stop on the Hudson MTA line as a place where i could basically leave my car in a parking garage until I need to use it again.
Does anyone know if Tarrytown has covered-parking/garage near the train station? Anyone have any other westchester-area train stops they'd recommend looking at?

Why don't you just GET RID of the car and use a zip car when you need one?

Well, because zip car is at least $75-105 per day in NYC...so if I can leave the car in westchester for $100/mo and use it more than once a month...i'm better off keeping it. (it's old and paid off)
If I discover i'm not using it more than once a month, i'll dump it.
now...about that parking garage in Tarrytown...does it exist?

yeah, there's a big parking lot right next to the train station. The funny thing is they used to even have 1 zip car by the metro north station but I don't think it's there anymore. The parking area got smaller within the last few years because they built a town hall in one of the lots and new apartment buildings.

Are there permits required for that parking lot? That's actually the problem with most of the lots near MTA stations.
I just think that, with the costs of registration, insurance, parking and maintenance, when amortized over a year, a zip car would be a more reasonable choice. But it's your money....

yes you need a permit for that lot unfortunately. There are some other parking lots scattered around Tarrytown in proximity to the metro north but I don't know how hard it is to get a spot. I know there's a small lot by the YMCA on main street, but I don't know the situation whether its permit or something different.
I decided to do a little quick research and you can park there. Its pretty expensive though, I think viralmd is spot on about using a zipcar, but here's the info
Village of Tarrytown, NY - Village Parking
PARKING PERMITS
Note: annual permits run June 1 through May 31
Permit Type Annual Fee/Semi-Annual Fee
Resident $225/$160
Non-Resident $1,045/$625
Business $250/$190
and here's another small map of the parking directly around the metro north station
http://as0.mta.info/mnr/stations/parking/Tarrytown.pdf
The 2nd map is a little inaccurate though, the space it has listed by depot plaza/white street isn't parking anymore to my knowledge. Thats where they built a brand new town hall at, with a lawn and everything. There's some parking next to the building but I don't know if its for commuters or municipal workers.

I would also note that it's pretty common for there to be WAITING LISTS for the permits, as well. Some are YEARS long.

in case your worried about waiting list, they just built a huge garage in white plains right by the hospital on longview(grove st/mlk blvd) between west post road and maple. I don't know the exact conditions but its about a 10-15 minute walk from the metro north.

I would investigate White Plains. There are a lot of parking lots there.

There is no waiting time for tarrytown resident as well as non resident. The annual and semi-annual starts from 1 Jun after which it is pro-rated. The rate is as what somebody else posted : Non-Resident $1,045/$625.
The non-resident one is right next to station on the river side. Its a large lot.
