I took a marsh walk with my son today along Long Island Sound and we spotted a large bittern, a hunting osprey and at least 20 snowy white egrets.

I've lived off and on in this area since I was a kid, and fished and explored a lot of Westchester and CT coastline. I never remember seeing white egrets. Now they're all over the place...lakes, ponds, streams, my neighbor's koi pond (heh). A stretch of the Hutch by Co-op City goes past a marsh and you can see them in the trees.

Has anyone else noticed the same thing? Any idea why egrets are so common now?

I know Feds have been effectively rebuilding the fishing stocks in the Long Island Sound. Maybe that's part of the reason?

Yes, I have noticed some more unusual fowl but I'm not familiar with breeds until you made me look them up.
