The 300's is right where it gets shady. Relatives live in the 600's on N Broadway and any lower than that and it starts to get bad. The higher the number on N Broadway, the nicer the neighborhood is. In fact there are alot of gorgeous huge homes in and around northern N Broadway. I googled 300 and its right near Glenwood Rd which is where the Son of Sam lived (long time ago and not that relevant). Coincidentally, I knew a family that lived on that street. Sadly, the father got shot and killed while standing in his driveway about 3 years ago. I lost touch with that family awhile ago so I don't know if they ever found the killer but the father was a sweet man who was not into "shady" business. The neighborhood was going downhill and this man as in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe I'm biased, but I don't think that area is safe and its not near the Metro North either.

Wow, very interesting and useful information! Just found info about the Son of Sam which I was not familiar with. Starting about what numbers northward do the areas become much better? anywhere before the 1000's?

I think the 600's and up are very nice. Right where N. Broadway and Shonnard intersect is the beginning of the nicer part of N. Broadway. Big beautiful older homes but I don't think its walking distance to Metronorth. Are you looking for a house or apartment?

Actually, the son of sam lived on Pine St which is off Glenwood and right near 300 N Broadway. I knew he lived around there as the family i knew used to point out the apartment building.

its a safe nabe (at least that part of broadway), the closest metro north station is Glenwood, meaning if you walked you'd be walking down and hill and then walking back up a very tiring hill.
Now you could easily walk down Glenwood ave to the Metro North but If your concerned about safety I would say watch yourself at night. As an alternative you could also take the bus to Getty Square and then get on the metro north (a very short distance by bus).
I really don't feel things are that convenient on this part of Broadway. In my opinion if you have like public transportation then you can take a short ride on the bus to the square and get groceries or whatever. There's plenty of apartment buildings around but it's not that walkable as it is further down broadway or even down the hill on Warburton. If you feel like you need some conveniences like movies and supermarkets other than A&P then you can either drive or take the bus over to central ave.
