Default Dobbs v. White Plains v. Tarrytown v. another town?

My husband and I recently got married and are looking to buy a house in lower westchester. I work in White Plains but he works in Jersey City. He would need to take the metro north to grand central and then the path to jersey. So northern westchester is too far. We would like a town that has good schools since we would like to start trying to have children soon, but not overly competitive schools. We would like a liberal, down-to-earth feel with ideally a downtown village, or at least one in a neighboring town. I don't want a snobby feel and am not interested in scarsdale or bronxville. We would like to spend around 500k for a house, if possible. the taxes are just so high! any suggestions for twons or opinions on Dobbs Ferry, White Plains, Tarrytown? What about Valhalla or Tuckahoe?

Thanks!

That's a relatively low budget for these areas. And that commute sounds like a nightmare. You should stick to looking in NJ, IMO.

The Metro North to Jersey City is a terrible commute. He would have to take Metro North to the Shuttle to the 1 and then the Path-I think, unless there is an easier way. I agree that NJ would probably be a better option. If you are adamant about Westchester, I'd try to stick to lower West - even White Plains seems far if the poor guy has to take 3 different trains. Dobbs Ferry and Tuckahoe come to mind with your requirements above. Good Luck.

What about Rockland County? Would places like Nyack, Orangeburg, Blauvelt or Tappan work?
