I'm a high school math teacher and my husband is a pharmacist. We thinking about moving to NY from Chicago...somewhere near nyc/Manhattan. We will be renting for a while before buying a house. Please inform me about safe neighborhoods as well as those to avoid. I know it's very expensive to rent in near nyc/Manhattan but we wouldn't mind a 15-20 min commute. We're used the fast city life, so we'd like to stay closer to the city but live in a quieter place.

Also, what is the best school district near this area? Any particular high school to avoid? What are the top high schools? I don't have to worry about my husband 'cuz there are so many Walgreens/CVS everywhere!

Looking ahead, if I want to buy a single family home near the city, which quiet suburb would you recommend?

I'll appreciate any advice/recommendations.

My town, Scarsdale is good. It's a beautiful town and it's really safe. I'm sure the school's are good since it's one of the wealthiest towns in New York. It's about 20-30 minutes outside the city.

Tarrytown is another one about 12 miles outside the city along the Hudson River.

White Plains is good but there are areas you need to watch out for there. It's a pretty big town.

Default Relocating trouble

I considered moving south within the next 3 years but living here in New Jersey with these ill-mannered, crazy people is driving me crazy!!!!
I have been to New York several times and even though there are a lot of people (compared to Jersey) the mannerisms are more to my liking. As a single woman should I consider Brooklyn or Harlem? I hear there is major building renovations in those areas.
