Default Looking for information on living in Hartsdale

Hi, my wife and I are considering moving to Hartsdale. We don't care about the schools (we would use private schooling), but we do care about commute times to the city and property lot size, and Hartsdale seems to rank well in both areas. Can anyone give us any impressions about "the feel" of Hartsdale, what's it like to live there, etc.?

Also, how about parking for the train, is it available if you are a Hartsdale resident?

Finally, any alternative areas you'd recommend? (We really can't go higher than $675K.)

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Hartsdale has a very nice little center with some restaurants, shops, a pharmacy, Rite Aid, vet, pastry shop, etc. We walk there all the time for things. The train commute on weekday mornings is just about 30 minutes if you are on an express. Local trains take about 45 minutes or so. Not sure about the parking situation for the train, sorry.

I think (partially because of the declining schools), Hartsdale is a little less expensive than surrounding "nice" looking areas and from what I know your $675K budget should work fine there unless you're looking for a really really big house and/or lot.

Hartdale is a nice town with some great neighborhoods, a cute little town center and an easy commute into NYC. The only thing going against Hartsdale, are the schools which you mentioned doesn't matter as much to you. Since schools aren't a concern, I think Hartsdale is the perfect town where you can get more for your money. $675K will get you a very nice house with decent size property (decent because most of lower Westchester has small lots anyway), parking at the train and a 30-40 minute commute. Train station parkign used to be open to anyone but recently they changed it so that it is only open to Hartsdale residents which would be a benefit to you.

There are some really nice areas of Hartsdale and now is a good time to buy. I would also look a Dobbs Ferry - I think you can get a nice house at that price and there are tone for sale right now. I must have passed through 10 for sale signs today on my way to soccer. Good Luck!

New Yawker, Have you looked at White Plains? You would get a decent house for that price range and relatively low property tax due to the large commercial base.

Yes, Lightning, we have looked pretty extensively at White Plains. Taxes there are a big plus, but we like the smaller town feel of Hartsdale a little better. Hartsdale is so close to WP anyway, so you still can get access to that wonderful shopping by living in Hartsdale.
