new school
We lived in the #1 rated PA district for many years. A little over a year ago we moved out to LI and had to go through the school selection process and had to find balance between school, commute and house. We knew what was "great", but had to find what we liked here in LI. I think we did well; although it is very different from what we came from. I moved over to the Westchester board when we found out that my husband's company is relocating to the Westchester area and next summer we will be too. I don't normally answer questions about the area, b/c I don't now anything about it, but your questions were far more "generic" than "Westchester".
Moving to a new place takes time. The best way to meet moms is to volunteer at class parties and through the PTO. Even volunteering to help with a dreaded fundraiser will get you into the school. The more time you spend in the school or at functions the better. If you work full time, this can be hard. However, if you are slightly flexible you can volunteer to show up for an event and work. Again, it takes a long time to make in roads.
If you are outgoing, you can host a cocktail party for the moms in "Mrs. XYZ's Kindergarten class". Kind of a getting to know you party from 5 till 8 pm. You supply the drinks (wine, martini's) they bring an appetizer. Make it casual and light with a beginning and an end and no obligation for them to show up for the entire time period.
If you have younger children, then play groups are the best way to break in to a new communittee. Also, church or synogauges are good too. It really does just take time and a desire to find people to hang out with. Good luck!
