You guys realize that whether or not it is an M or F printed on the ticket is up to you when it is ordered from the vending machine. If you were questioned by a conductor I don't see why you wouldn't just say you made a mistake and hit the wrong button. I occasionally use my wife's ticket and never had a problem.
John, you are absolutely right. I am the original poster, and since spending $800/ month on commuting costs for my husband and I is ludicrous, I Photoshopped an "F," slapped it over the "M" on the monthly pass, and still used his on the days he wasn't going in. Voila! I was never questioned and it saved us a bundle.

while I agree that this is clearly not the worst dishonesty in the world, it is still "stealing" (hey, I am an Eagle Scout, these sorts of things are important to me). but to respond to the argument that this is akin to a parking pass, the short answer is, it could be in theory, but it is not in practice. Both are priced with a certain expectation of use. A parking pass may be priced based on 100 percent usership every day, but the train is clearly not (close, but not exactly). Additionally, unlike most parking lots in which the users themselves are primarily responsible for any shortfalls/added expenses due to "cheaters", public transportation shortfalls are usually ultimately borne by the taxpers.
Long time reader, first time poster. My husband and I have bought our first home in nearby Dutchess County, NY. We both work in the city, but we both have permission to work from home a few days a week. We're hoping to just get 1 monthly Metro-North Railroad ticket to share, but we're not sure if we're allowed. We'd be going in on different days, so only one of us would use it at a time.
Have any of you tried this, and been successful?
(We noticed when filling out a monthly pass form online, it asks for gender - so I didn't know if there's a giant M or F on the pass!)
a long time ago (back in the 80's) i bought the wrong ticket by mistake and it said "M" on it without my realizing it. the conductor took my ticket and made a scene in front of everyone and scribbled "F" all over the ticket with his pen. it was not my mistake since a human had sold me the ticket and there was no need to embarass me over it. he treated me like i was trying to get away with something and i wasn't.

This is sex discrimination and discrimination against families who, because of children, must work part-time or some time at home. It's total crap. The rationalizations here are incredible. My wife and I constitute 7 days of commuting per week while we juggle children but we get screwed. That is, unless one of us had something different between our legs. It's outrageous.
