4 bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths (or more), ideally under $1m (lower the better, but willing to have a fixer upper)
Excellent public schools
Sidewalks/walkable town
Good public facilities (recreation, pools, etc)
Under 1 hr on train to Grand Central
Taxes... sigh... preferably not obscene

I would look at Pelham, since you can find what you want starting around the mid-800s, though a solarium will tend to push the price into the $900s+. That would be for a house on a smaller, in-town lot, and there are houses above that price range that meet the criteria as well. Pelham is about 30 minutes to Grand Central on the New Haven Line train.

I second Pelham. Most of the 20s and 30s houses here have sunrooms. Check out Pelham Heights.
