Well, Nick, my husband, my son and myself are VERY down to earth people but we spend most of our time alone (our life is NOT shopping, eating out and spending). We plan on moving as well.
As William said, there are clans here..there is the clan of the 'monied' or the 'popular' and if you don't fall in either, you are the 'odd ball.' Oh, wait, there is the clan of the 'spend to keep up with others.' and the worst clan 'mothers who live through their children!'

While I don't have kids, I was always kind of surprised by the school situation when I lived in NC. I was a pastor, and had many teachers in my parishes and worked with them on community projects, etc. while I don't doubt the commitment level and concern for kids, I just think the anti educational culture seeps in. I heard teachers in the classroom say things like, "I wont ready for you to turn in your paper", translation=I wasn't ready for you to turn in your paper.
There was a huge problem in one of our local elementary schools in Eastern NC. During African American history month, a teacher was overheard in a lounge referring to it as, "N**er history month." Strange thing was the amount of support from the community when the principle tried to discipline her.
Being there really made me appreciate the education I received in Michigan.

Probably about 25-30 minutes by train. By car probably 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and the part of the city you are going to.

Thanks for the correction. Brain Fart.
Anyway, an interesting thing happened to a friend of mine in Greenville NC. He was at a company picnic and a guy approached him about a social club he belonged to. He said they needed someone to keep their books. So, my friend decided to help them out and went to a meeting. Well, it wasn't long after the meeting started that he realized they were actually Klan!
He said thanks but no thanks and got out of there.
