I currently live in the Bronx, NY. I have 3 year old triplets. I am interested in buying a home that has good services for my children. One of my children is advanced and one of my children is on the autism spectrum. I am not concerned about gifted and talented because I truly believe in mixed ability classes. I only have between 500,00 and 600,00 for a house but I am willing to live in a very small house to get a great school district for my son.

I would like a school district that has a variety of programs for kids on the autism spectrum depending on his needs when he becomes school aged. I have heard great things about Eastchester and Ardsley's special needs programs and have been exclusively looking in these districts. I do not want my son with PDD to be bused out of district because he is a triplet and I would like them to go to school together.

Does anyone have information about Harrison's special need's programs?

I have not heard good thing about their program so I would guess it wouldn't be the best fit. I am currently in the Ardsley district after trying to research the best place to go for my 5 year old with PDD-NOS. We've been extremely happy. They are free and flowing with services and we've not had to fight to get what either of my children with IEP needs. They also are a very strong district for typical kids which is important for their younger siblings whom I am hoping will not need special services.

I have also heard good thing about autism programs in Pleasantville and Eastchester school districts. Both are also well regarded school districts. Good luck in your search!

It is not my experience that Ardsley is free and flowing with services. They offer appropriate services but often parents would like more and there are certainly parents who are disappointed and demand new placements out of district in Ardsley. Pville and Eastchester do have good programs, IMO.

I'm sure it's all relative to your perspective and your individual kids' needs. Where we came from in IL was a highly well regarded district for typical kids but getting them to give my kids OT or any kind of social skills support was like pulling teeth. In fact my oldest was receiving next to no services (only after I made a big fuss about his reading and writing delays) and made little gains in Kindergarten. We come here and they immediately gave him those supports as well as social skills supports. My current Kindergartener I was told in IL need no services whatsoever which would have been a giant problem had we not moved here as he needed the support of a self-contained classroom for part of the day to be able to handle his social anxiety. Granted my children are high functioning so it might be different for more effected kids but I had heard they had a good program for kids more completely on the spectrum.

In the end, you'll have to fight wherever you are but I do think Ardsley does a fairly good job of supporting kids on the spectrum. Here are links to other postings people has put up about their good experience there:
