It's been reported in the local Cherokee Scout newspaper that the tribe is considering a casino in Murphy. Jobs are definitely needed but there will still be lots of opposition from those against gambling. If I remember correctly it's to be in the Andrews area. Below is another write up found.
300 room casino, sounds like a good start. The casino in Cherokee has 4 times that capacity.
This will help put Murphy on the map, good or bad? I think they talked before about having more than gambling at the 2nd casino, more family oriented. Commitee voted 11-1 for it.
Is the one in Cherokee doing well? I would think it is considering how big it became. My grandmother is addicted to that place.
We wonder about the benefit that the casino will add to the town as well. Jobs, of course, but I'm wondering if employment would be offered to the Cherokee first, which would be understandable. Will the casino bring tax money into the town? Will it bring an undesirable element or increase tourism and local businesses? This town could use a shot in the arm, I hope the casino helps and is not just another place for the locals to lose thier money.
I read only about one in four or less of the workers at Harrahs is a tribal member. And many just don't want to work. Someone correct me if I'm wrong lol.
I would rather a casino come in than nothing at all. The Florida retiree bubble popped (i caused a few to go back with my embarrassing shack built) anything that could attract tourism would bring money into the area. The Indians are going into further debt with this and in turn they will try hard to make it successful. My mother worked at the Harrahs and said thier new resort status only came with strict rules for employees who act perfect. Even housemaids. They want to become less dependent on the federal government and reach as many tourists as possible. Those coonhat made in china moccasin stores probably don't cut it.
