I am assuming that most of the major roads are paved or at least passable in most weather??

Uummm...I don't know about what the town of Lake Lure says, but it has been hotter here than in Flat Rock/Hendersonville every day for the past 2 weeks.
Yesterday, in Flat Rock, it was 88 at our old house. At the same time, at our house in a resort here at Lake Lure, it was 98.
Just FYI.

That is correct. The biggest neighborhood without paved roads is Riverbend.

There are numerous properties to rent so that you can see for yourself what the conditions are like. I moved here from DC, so until you reach Miami, no city has any comparable traffic problems. Everything is relative, as they say.
Even the unpaved roads of Riverbend are not impassible because we don't have the significant snowfall of surrounding towns at higher elevations.

I'm heading to lake Lure in about a week. I've posted on this site a few times and didn't forget about it, as it's one of the best forums to swap information. I haven't been here in like 4 to 5 months so I'm just catching up. I was interested in Asheville, however I grew up and still live on Cassadaga Lake in NY State and want a similar life style so I am leaning towards Lake Lure.
I'm an accomplished home builder and want to retire in the area, providing it's what I am looking for. So far, so good. I'm going to do a little building by myself if I make the jump. I'm not quite 50 and still have a need to keep busy. I've been looking for over 16 months now and have met some real nice people here on this forum. Some willing to help me like they were my eyes and ears. I'm in contact with banks, realtors and a few subs too. The more information I can get the better.
I'm stopping in Charlotte for my nephews wedding. I also have quite a few relatives in NC who gave up on NY State, like I have. To much snow and taxes are driving people out of their homes after generations. Flipping houses destroys neighborhoods people. Take it from an accomplished builder. I didn't flip but I'm a victim. Taxes are killing us!!!
Any way, I might have some interesting insite from a new comer's prospective and will be taking pictures as I go along. Some I might post here, if possible.
I do have a few questions though, I will be needing a place to camp over night cheep. I'm roughing it as it is due to tagging along with my brother who is way cheep. Anyone have any suggestions?
I'm coming down the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Great Smoky Mountains for maybe a day. Turn back towards Asheville for a day and end up in Lake Lure for a day. Then on to the wedding in Charlotte area. So, I need camping arrangements or a bathroom/shower directions, even if it's a truck stop or a stream on the side of the road. Have sleeping bag, will travel, lol.
Any help is much appreciated.
Could also use an internet access with computer so I can access online. The X wife got my laptop, Dammit!!!

I recommend Hickory Nut Falls Campground in Chimney Rock, near Lake Lure. Reserve a spot on the river - that rushing trout stream makes for the best night sleep ever! You'd be just under 2 hours to Charlotte from there so you could leave the campground dressed for the wedding

The surface elevation of Lake Lure at full pond is 992 feet, which is lower than the Atlanta airport at 1,026 feet. Elevation increases to the west in what is now mostly protected land. Despite the views, Lake Lure is not a mountain lake.
The average July temperature of 74 degrees is likely the averaged high and low temperatures, which is a completely useless figure. The 85 for Asheville is the average high. It just makes it sound more pleasant to average the high and low together.
Like in Tryon, they'll rant and rave about the "thermal belt" and the average annual temperature of 60 degrees; 100 in the summer and 20 in the winter.
Still, Lake Lure is a beautiful area.

I made the trip. Stopped at 12 Bones in Asheville and since then all my brother could say is it was the best BBQ he's ever had. Took a while to find the place because their sign was on the wall, low to the ground and the line of people outside obscured it completely. Excellent food, imo. Took some with us on our way to Lake Lure and ended up staying the night at Evening Shade in the bear room, turned off the air conditioner and left the door open all night. It was an excellent nights sleep with the sound of the river rushing by. We took a trip up to Chimney Rock after we settled in, then had a swim in the river. Had 12 Bones BBQ for dinner and a few Ginnuses Stouts by the river's edge at the fire pit. I hated to leave. I'm coming back to look for land. I've been looking online for 16 months to get familiar with the place. If I could find a job down there, I'd come down before winter.
