Nice move, Boone is an awesome town especially if you love the outdoors and mountains. Speaking of prayer, I was in the mountains just outside of Boone as I had been doing some cycling in the area a few years ago and the vehicle that my mother and I were in began to have some problems. We wound up stopped roadside, and a guy stopped and prayed with us. The vehicle ran well the rest of the time and we made it back home without breaking down.

Boone is a great town. My family and I visit there and the surrounding area every October. It can get pretty busy there during the school year (especially when families visit on weekends) and during leaf season, but it's such a beautiful place. Lots to do in "the great blue hills of God". I hope y'all find what you're looking for there.
While I'm posting, I have to recommend Dan'l Boone Inn Restaurant. The line to get in can be long, but the wait is worth it. Delicious country cookin' served homestyle. Fried chicken, salisbury steak, corn, country ham biscuits (awesome!), green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, dessert (usually a cake or cobbler) and, of course, your drink all for one price. The food is brought to your table in bowls and there are free refills on everything except the country ham biscuits and the dessert. My family and I eat there every time we go to Boone.

All the best!

Actually, Mitford is the fictional town fashioned after Blowing Rock Wouldn't we all love to live there? I know I would!

I grew up in western North Carolina and have read a couple of the Jan Karon books. I know that Mitford is a fictional town, but it seems to me to be fashioned after several towns. The cheese factory is in West Jefferson. The canning factory is in Boone. Jan Karon has done a wonderful job capturing the nature of the western North Carolina people. You would have to ask Jan Karon and I may be wrong, but I believe the fictional town covers more than just Blowing Rock. And yes, it was wonderful living there. I just wanted to let Father John know that he is moving to a place that has wonderful people. After all, isn't that what really makes a town.

Amen to that.
I have contacted a few people in churches we may visit - WARM welcomes!
I have contacted people in various other services or businesses in the area - all terrific!
Ironically, the only "negative" experience was those 8 or 9 RE Agents who never returned inquiring emails. But that is OK and certainly did not turn me off to the people of North Carolina at all! I found a good RE Agent and I am excited about coming to meet more people.
Yes, people make the world, the communities, and experience. Thanks for the kind words.

Please add us to the prayer chain!
My son is starting at App. State on Monday. I am taking him tomorrow with very heavy heart. While I am proud and happy for him, my heart is aching.
We are trying to sell our home in Fla and move to NC ourselves. We have had two job interviews in Asheville and are waiting for the final decision due on Monday. We are also interviewing in Hickory.
Prayers are needed.

Your son will be fine. It is hard to let them go. When our eldest went from Arizona to the University of Michigan, it was tough. But with computers and internet, you can stay in touch!
Nonetheless, you have been added to the prayers. I am sure all will work for the best for you.

Awwww...VBmom, I feel your pain! This is a great new adventure you son is on, try not to be so sad I will certainly add you to the prayer chain - that's you, the Parkies, Father John and Dawn and her family who are undergoing rabies shots here in Charlotte after a bat got into their home!
