Actually, Cat Birds, I intentionally left out a lot of towns. Some that I've been to don't hold enough allure for me I guess.

I love Blowing Rock! It's really charming and reminds me of East Hampton in the mountains

Based on the fact I've only visited 6 of the 12 places listed in the OP -Black Mountain is by far my favorite.

And here are my reasons:

- Downtown Black Mountain is quaint and easily doable to walk the entire visit (as in, I can park and take it all in by foot).

- It's aesthetically pleasing to me and clean.

- A lot of antique stores and good places to eat. My Father's Pizza is a favorite.

- It's quite similar to where we moved here from: Jacksonville, OR. And it's a short drive from where I currently live in east Asheville.

- My Husband plays music at the Town Pump frequently. Good people.

My favorites:
I like Black Mountain's downtown area for several reasons including very walkable, great eateries, nice mountain views, VERY dog friendly, and it just has a great vibe.

I love Blowing Rock because it is just a beautiful little town in the high country with great restaurants and so close to hiking and the Blue Ridge. Great ambiance here too!

I also like the town of Brevard, love the Sunrise cafe and the college. But the one thing I don't care for is that the entire downtown seems to close down and the are not many great restaurants or much happening downtown. Other than Sunrise cafe and the mexican restaurant I don't really know of any coffee shows, bakeries, or nice hangouts.

I like Highlands because of the elevation and beauty but it has a weird artificial vibe to it.

I've only been to downtown Hendersonville, Weaverville and Waynesville, and all were pretty cute! Hendersonville had more stuff to walk around and see, but Weaverville has Mikes Mainstreet Grill (a fav place of ours) as well as Well Bred bakery.. Mmmmm...
