Both my parents were lucky enough to retire from jobs where they kept their insurance. Sometimes I don't think they realize how little they pay in comparison to others.
We are self-employed and pay for our own. Our rates could never compete with employer-based insurance.

My COBRA runs out in March and it will be another 18 months before I am eligible for Medicare.

I would give you my insurance agents' contact information, but I don't think that's allowed on this forum.

Andy - We currently live in FL and are seriously considering a move to WNC. Here in FL, for two adults, both self employed, we pay more in yearly premiums than you do in NY. Significantly more. We have BC/BS PPOs with $1000 deductables. And since Obamacare was passed in the spring, we have not only noticed an increase in the monthly payments but also BC/BS suddenly denying things that they have paid for years such as prescriptions with brand names and doctor visits. And it is practically fruitless to question BC/BS even when the doctor gets involved. So unless the healthcare bill is repealed at some point or revised, change is definitely coming and we are already seeing it. And we have very good, standard policies. To go with BC/BS in NC, the cost would be about the same and maybe even a bit higher than in FL. Plus we would need to do a few other things, we were advised, on the business end in order to get the health insurance as we have now. So a move to NC is not going to be any less expensive when it comes to healthcare. Moving to WNC also means less choice with the number of hospitals and doctors available. But that said, if a move to WNC allows you to live a happier, more fullfilled life then perhaps you will also be healthier living in such an environment -- at least, that is what we are thinking. Be well.
