Thanks to all for the input, and especially to SunnyKayak for the beautiful pictures. We will be in NC for 2 weeks in August and will check out all the places that have been suggested.

Yeah I love kayaking it great way to let your mind relax for a few hours.
I only been doing touring kayaking not performance, or whitewater. I would like to try it but I think the whole concept of flipping over in a bananna peel would freak me out LOL.

It only 35 dollars at the whitewater center so maybe I can have one of trainers teach me how and good ways to work a eddy when I get in one.
Hi SunnyKayak,
Hmmm... since hubby goes out nearly every day here, that could get expensive (I'm sure those guys don't do drop offs for free)! Are there any interesting lakes where one could paddle around and come back to the same place?

We are into the communing with nature version of kayaking, definitely not the performance/white water stuff... I have a fat stable kayak for me and the dog

Some of rivers especially near the head waters of these rivers the water is really calm like the one pictured above.
I discussed with my partner while we was traveling down that the water was so calm that we could paddle up river if we wanted to.
Except for a few eddy's I think it would be easy to go upstream.
If he needed a break or wanted to fish he could tie the kayak to one of the trees that line the river.
Just be aware of your surroundings in the second picture I wanted to see what was up in that field up on the left, and something moved in grass so we jump back in kayak and made our way down stream fast lol.

I kayak lakes all the time I dont want to hijack this thread since the OP looking for towns by rivers vs good kayak spots.
