There is one thing we're having a tough time finding around the A'ville area - a good quality butcher. So far, we're not impressed with Ingle's steaks, etc., nor have we found good meat at Harris Teeter. We've also tried some EarthFare type place up on Merrimon without success. Do you have any suggestions for a good butcher around town where we can find quality steaks, chops, etc?
Not an Asheville rez, or xpert on the area...we hunt up decent quality, (if pricey) meat at Fresh Mkt on north Merrimon. And, Sam's is decent and good value, imo.
In our town of Waynesville, the meat selection is barely 2nd tier, via Ingles, et al, imo.

The Earth Fare in South Asheville I think has a better meat counter than their West Asehville store, IMO. We've been happy with what they have and will do on request. Of course, since they usually have buffalo they get extra points from us!
For good meat, stay away from Sams Club. I mean, come on ... it's Sams Club.
Let me know if you want local fresh stuff. Friends just ordered a whole lamb and it wasn't expensive. Warren Wilson College also sells like sides of beef. It's clean and good.
EarthFare is fine. Stay away from WholeFoods (also called GreenLife). When GL was GL, it was fab. Now a lot of stuff is just ... 365 garbage and they take the meaning of "local" to a new level - like it means it's from somewhere in the U.S. EarthFare's definition is w/in 100 miles of the store.

If that was in retort to my initial Sam's Club comment, I disagree; Sam's ain't Sparks or Lugers, or Gramercy or Jeffery's meat mkts., but compared to the crap stores in Waynesville,
it's decent, imo.
A good friend of mine still brokers for the 3-4 big feed lots in the US, of which ~90% of 'market beef' comes from, and other than Sam's/Costco/et all beating down the prices,
he has remarked that those joints buy decent quality, albeit at pressured down prices.
My point of view was that when we do get to Asheville, from Waynesville, we feel FM is good/pricey, and Sam's is good/less pricey. I don't need a half side from a farmer; I could get
that in my home town.

Gotta' say, the best steaks in Hendersonville are either at Sam's Club or if it makes you feel better to spend more $$$ then go to Fresh Market. You can also get very nice Romaine lettuce in packages and spring salad mix. Spend the money you save on a nice bottle of Pinot Noir!
Sam's has excellent angus sirloin in packages of maybe 4 or 5 for around $20. They also have excellent pork roasts.
