coming to nc marion (Raleigh, Durham: chapel, new home, construction)

Looking to move to the Marion area. Ihave been in the flooring trade for 25 yrs. My wife is a r.n. WE have 5 kids 1 still in school. Moving down from Cape Cod ma. How is the area for 13yr old kids. Is there skill labor jobs. The area looks really nice. Also your outlook on Asheville or Hickoy Thanks

From an available work point of view, the Asheville Metro Area (Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, and Madison counties) will be a much better choice since it is the largest Metro Area in Western NC with a population of approximately 400,000. The area is still hot for new home construction and remodeling. It's a very popular spot for new retirees from the Northeastern U.S. and Florida folks who have summer homes here. Also, since we have so many senior citizens in the area, healthcare is a priority with many hospitals and healthcare delivery businesses for an area of this size.

The city of Asheville (pop. 70,000) is politically liberal but the burbs and surrounding counties are conservative.

In my opinion, the Asheville Metro Area has the best weather in NC with four distinct seasons. Moderate winters AND summers, a rarity for most of NC. Expect July highs around 83 degrees with January lows around 26 degrees. Normal snowfall for the season is around 15".

There is also a very good commercial airport halfway between the cities of Asheville and Hendersonville serviced by Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, and US Airways.

If your teenager likes canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, backpacking, cycling, rock climbing, hunting and fishing, he'll like it here. We have the Pisgah National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway, Chimney Rock Park, the Appalachian Trail and the French Broad River. Mount Mitchell, (EL. 6,684) the highest point East of the Mississippi River is around 35 miles from Asheville.

Thanks for the info we are planning a trip down in April. If anybody is in the flooring trade I need some info on vinly flooring work. Mostly sheet flooring. Vinly tile work. In the Asheville area.

The Triangle area , Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill has two major University medical centers 30 minutes from each other. UNC Medical Center at Chapel Hill, and Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Wake Medical Center in Raleigh is a major private hospital with 752 beds and 9 other satellite facilities around the triangle. I was a NICU nurse at Duke for 5 years and they have teriffic benifits. I wish I had stayed long enough to take advantage of the free tution to Duke offered the echildren Duke University employees( my kids were 2, 4 and 6).
The Triangle area is the fastest growing part of North Carolina and as a member of a related industry to home construction and improvements , I see lots of oppurtunities for your husband locally. I think my favorite part of having lived in the Triangle for the last 22 years, is that being centrally located, and not living in the mountains or on the coast( only 3 hours from either one) I can still enjoy them both as easy to reach and enjoy vacation spots without paying the higher cost of living either place year round. The beaches are beautiful, and natural at the outerbanks, and we have a time share on Sugar Mountain in Boone for the best skiing south of New England. Really anywhere you move to in North Carolina will be a positive one. Best of luck with this important decision. Jay

I would not live in Marion!!! My husband and I were looking at relocating to Marion from Swannanoa,NC and I was shocked at what I saw......The place is a DUMP!!!!! Also you need to check out the schools, Mcdowell county schools are terrible!!! Check out SchoolMatters - Home for school info. My husband and I decided to go father into the Hudson,Baton,Sawmills area. I dont know about the jobs there but the area is very nice. Good Luck!

STAY AWAY FROM MARION!!! Unless you wish to live in the 1940's. This area is RULED by little old ladies and men who do not want to change into the 2000's. I would settle just for 2001. Also, the work force here is bad. Too many lazy people. All they want is a paycheck and not willing to put in the hours to better themselves. We are getting out of here and moving east...as far away from here as possible.

Too many lazy people in Marion?! These are people who work 8-10 hours in non-airconditioned, non heated cotton mills and furniture plants plants their entire lives and are happy with who they are and content with what they have.

Incredibly keywestwego, you somehow managed to insult most of my family. May I ask where you moved to Marion from and where you're moving to?

I love Marion, though I have never lived there I do go thru there frequently and on more than one occasion have said to my hubby, "I would live here"
