You can't really get directly northwest of Boone without getting into TN. There are towns there, sure. (Sugar Grove, Vilas, etc) but they are tee-tiny.

If you head south and west of Boone into Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey County, you'll find towns like Bakersville, Burnsville, Spruce Pine, and Crossnore.

They're tiny (200-2000 people). Most people in these areas live outside of town.

What are you looking for in a town?

Only town of any size west of Asheville is Waynesville; so close you might as well be in Asheville. As the other posters noted, everything else is way small, though I suspect the Marshall area will grow, what with all the interest. Also, once you start getting up in those areas, the roads narrow down and get twisty. If you aren't used to that kind of driving, it can be daunting.

Mountain City, TN is way too small to have much in the conventional entertainment area. The population is less than 3,000 residents.

Western NC is made up of mostly small, stand-alone towns with the exception of the City of Asheville with a population of 70,000. The Asheville metro area (Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood & Madison counties) has a population of around 400K. As far as the northwestern area of the mountain region of NC, Boone is about it with a population of around 14K.
