Some Qs about teaching in WNC
Hi, everyone.
Contemplating a move to WNC from NYC. I know there's a teacher shortage in NC, but what's the job picture for a HS teacher in the mountains? Can anyone tell me how many classes a HS teacher carries per semester? (I know you have double periods, which is different from NY. Here we teach 5 classes per day.
Anyone know about job prospects in community colleges for an English teacher with two Master's degrees (MA and MFA)? Does anyone know what a full-time cc teacher gets paid?
Do teachers get any help with home buying in NC?
Finally, does NC tax teacher pensions (state tax) from other states?
If you can address any part of this query, I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to add anything else that addresses the title of this post.
Thanks,
Maryellen

The mountains are very different from other parts of NC in that there is NO teacher shortage. Places that are hurting for teachers might help with relocation, but that is not the case in the mountains.
The teacher population is quite stable, and there's not much need for new classrooms or schools since the majority of people moving to the mountains do not have school-age kids.

Sounds grim. Surely they need some teachers in WNC?

Er, um, can an elementary school teacher find employment in this within western NC at all? Gobs and gobs of experience, decades worth even. . .

Sorry if I am answering this twice. I'm not sure my first reply registered. The answer is yes, and it is my understanding that teachers get some help in most states--probably in your state too.
In NY, b/c we have shortages still, esp. in certain areas (math, science, English as a Second Language) and in certain "undesirable" neighborhoods, teachers can get salary differentials on top of the regular salary for teaching those subjects or teaching in specific areas. Teachers also get good deals on homes in certain neighborhoods, esp. if they are teaching in those neighborhoods. Any teacher can get some sort of help--I'm not sure of the extent, but I see advertisements in my teacher paper all the time.

Yes, but competition is high, especially in the higher rated elementary schools. A good deal of xperience, and/or an advanced degree would help to stand out from other applicants.

I have seen salary differentials paid in Charlotte, but never in the Asheville area. I have never heard of a teacher getting a deal on a home just because they are a teacher.

Thank you for the info, cooperwx. My husband will have had over 20 years' experience in elementary school teaching in the trenches of Los Angeles' worst battlefields, which sadly even include those selfsame elementary schools: police lockdowns, older siblings' gang jump ins, little English spoken, etc. He also has a Masters' degree in Educational Psychology from a top university.
I am hoping we can breath easier then. We will be fleeing the horrors of Los Angeles in the next several years at his so-called retirement. But a teacher's and my freelancer's low salaries dictate that he keep working. He fortunately doesn't care if it's one of your more desireable neighborhoods, as long as it's employment vaguely around the Asheville environs. That is reassuring that he will be able to find work based upon his considerable experience.
